Supplements to Improve Mood

depressionAlthough outward circumstances, such as the weather, our finances and relationships, can play a role in our happiness, chemicals in the brain also influence your emotions—for better or worse. And while you can sometimes overcome these emotions by deciding to be happy, the right supplements help support that decision. Keep in mind, depression is a psychiatric disorder that requires medical attention.

Antidepressants Vs. Supplements for Mood

Many people find that antidepressants either carry too many risks or stop working after a time, says Henry Emmons, MD in an article for WebMD. Therefore, supplements might be a better option when used in conjunction with exercise and a balanced diet. The right blend of supplements helps ward off depression by prompting a healthy balance of brain chemicals including endorphins–one of three main classes of opiates that work in the brain to improve your mood. Talk to your doctor about other therapies, herbs and medicines that might help improve your mood.

B Vitamins

B vitamins are often a main ingredient in energy drinks and supplements because they work to convert carbohydrates to energy in the body. They also support tryptophan production, an amino acid that produces mood-enhancing chemicals in the brain. In conjunction with calcium supplements, some women find the B vitamins also helpful for decreasing premenstrual depression.

Omega-3 fatty Acids

Omega-3 fatty acids in the form of fish oil have become a cure-all supplement for ailments ranging from acne to heart disease. People with mood and behavioral disorders, such as bipolar disorder and ADHD, sometimes use fish oil to help manage their conditions. Experts recommend people eat fish twice weekly for general health purposes. Use fish oil supplements in conjunction with your twice-weekly serving of fish. Common dosages range from 2,000 to 4,000 milligrams daily.

Vitamin D

Vitamin D, also known as the sunlight vitamin, is sometimes used to treat seasonal mood disorders. It works with the sun’s rays to help synthesize essential vitamins for mood and health.
