Water Filters for Drinking and Showering

No matter what type of water you have (well water or city water) you should be using some type of water filtration system especially for your drinking water and when you take a shower.  My husband and I first became interested in water filtration about 14 years ago when we came home from work late one night (after the news) and there had been a boil alert out on the water and we didn’t hear about it. Needless to say, we both drank the water and got sick. My husband did a lot of research before deciding to purchase the Aquasana water filtration products.  We currently use their under sink counter-top unit and their shower water filter. My husband had spoken with several companies and was impressed with the knowledge Aquasana had and the education the company provided about the many health risks of unsafe drinking water. Did you know that drinking water can have chlorine, chemicals, pesticides, heavy metals, cysts or parasites in it?  If you want to know more about what’s in your water, read the National Primary Drinking Water Regulations.

Counter Top or Under Sink Water Filter

I have been using this system for over 14 years. I wanted to share with you why we chose this unit. We felt that this unit offered the best water filtration and value when compared to other units on the market. The counter top units use a patented dual cartridge system that combines carbon filtration, ion exchange, and sub micron filtration to produce healthy, great tasting water. Carbon filtration works by controlling what contaminants can get through the filter based on the diameter or size of the pores within the filter. This particular carbon filter is a .5-micron filter and effectively removes sediments and chlorine. Ion Exchange filtration percolates water through bead-like spherical resin materials leaving ion-exchange resins. These resins exchange ions and attach contaminants to their bead-like resin material. In water purification, the resin, once it has exchanged its ions with the contaminants in the water, the ions reverse the process replacing the contaminants bound to the resins with potassium. Sub micron carbon filtration removes chlorine resistant parasites. This counter-top or under-sink water filter unit effectively removes lead, prescription drugs, heavy metals, VOC’s, and SOC’s. Our cartridges last approximately 5 months and filters 500 gallons of water.

Shower Water Filters

Showering in chlorinated water is one of the worst things you can do for your skin and your overall health.  Not to mention the other impurities the water can have. Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC’s) are one of the contaminants that can exist in your water. VOC’s are compounds that contain carbon and easily evaporate from water and go into the air. Products such as fuel oils, gasoline, solvents, cleaners, degreasers, paints, inks, dyes, refrigerants, and pesticides contain VOC’s. There are also many VOC’s contained in commercial, industrial and residential products. These VOC’s, which are sometimes spilled or disposed of improperly and do not evaporate into the air soak into the ground. Once the ground has absorbed them they can be carried deeper into the ground from rainwater or melting snow and eventually reach the groundwater level. This means, they can end up in your shower water. After doing some research on the EPA’s website, VOC’s are a definite concern for most of us because they affect one fifth of the nation’s water supply. The absorption of VOC’s is very high in the shower between the air temperature and all the pores on your skin being opened and exposed. I never thought taking a shower could be such a potential health risk. I don’t know about you, but I take a shower to get clean and feel refreshed, not possibly damage myself. Their shower water filter uses a two-stage filtering system that works great on not only removing VOC’s, but also all the other items I previously mentioned including Chlorine. I feel relieved knowing that the shower I am taking is now truly a refreshing shower. P.S. I do not want to get on the band wagon and debate all the issues surrounding bottled water like pollution and the possibility of chemicals leaching from the plastic. I know sometimes when we are away from home the only option we have is to purchase bottled water. All I am going to mention is that when you can take the water with you, check out the Aquakoozy and the Stainless Steel Water Bottles Aquasana has to offer.  I use both types and have been very happy with them.  I especially feel good about doing my part in helping the planet.
