How to Treat and Prevent Bug Bites

If you feel as though you can’t enjoy the outdoors because of mosquitoes or other summer insects, it’s time to take action.

Citronella for Mosquito Bite Prevention

Preventing bugs bites can be an expensive endeavor, although it doesn’t have to be. There’s no need to purchase costly mosquito repellent misting systems, lamps or other heavy-duty equipment. And for those who hate spraying chemicals on skin and clothing, there is an alternate solution. Natural products may be as effective as chemical-based sprays and lotions. Citronella is one example. Citronella is widely known for its ability to fend off mosquitoes. Derived from the citronella plant, citronella oil has a pungent odor that is offensive to bugs. The scent masks the odor of humans and animals, leaving hungry bugs unable to find their targets. You’ll find citronella candles at hardware and home stores throughout the summer season.

Treating Bug Bites

Once you’ve been bitten by a mosquito or other summer pest, you don’t have to suffer with chronic itching and swelling. You can treat your bite with natural oils. The following are effective examples.

Tea Tree Oil is an all-purpose oil that has been in use for centuries. The soothing oil is derived from the tee tree plant and used for a multitude of purposes, including treating acne, dry scalp and athlete’s foot. Due to its antifungal and antiseptic properties, the oil is an important component in first aid kits around the world. Slathering the oil on an itchy bug bite helps reduce the irritation and heal the bite, naturally.

Lavender Fine Essential Oil, like tea tree oil, has antiseptic and fungicidal qualities. When applied to an itchy bug bite, the oil soothes and calms irritated skin. Lavender oil is also helpful for open sores, as it naturally cleans wounds and kills bacteria that could lead to infection. Due to its analgesic characteristics, lavender oil is widely used to treat headaches.
