So many of us struggle to deal with the daily stresses of life. In fact, many of us deal with a myriad of emotions on a daily basis. As our emotions come and go quickly, our body and its systems can cope. However, when our emotions begin to linger, our body can and often does struggle. When this happens, we may need a little something to help us balance these emotions. Aromatherapy and Bach Flower Remedies are wonderful at helping individuals balance their emotions and cope with the daily stresses and emotions of life.
When our emotions are in check we are able to focus and concentrate with ease, as well as achieve a more restful sleep. With the connection of the mind and body, what the mind feels emotionally often affects how the body feels physically. I believe that when you are sick, there is almost always an emotional component to it. Since our emotions can have an impact on our overall health, they should not be ignored. Balancing our emotions should become a natural part of our wellness routine.
Bach Flower Remedies – What are they?
Bach Flower Remedies or Bach Flower Essences were developed by Dr. Edward Bach. Dr. Bach was a physician, bacteriologist and homeopath who lived in England. He had extensive knowledge in homeopathic medicine and was one of the first individuals to connect the body with the mind. His focus was not just on the physical symptoms of disease, but the emotional components as well. Dr. Bach noticed during his practice that even those his patients received the same treatment, not all of them responded the same. He attributed this difference to the individual’s emotions.
In fact, he felt so strongly about the emotional components of disease that he developed a set of 38 basic flower remedies. The flower essences he developed are still the cornerstone of all the flower essences in today’s market, he was a true pioneer! Flower essences are a form of homeopathy which captures the healing properties of non toxic trees and plants. The essences are made by placing the plant part in water and then setting them out in the sun to be instilled. Their main purpose is for healing and promoting the balance of the emotional self.
Dr. Bach during his research, identified seven main negative emotional states. These states are fear, uncertainty, lack of interest in present circumstance, loneliness, over sensitivity to influences and ideas, despondence or despair, and being overly concerned for the welfare of others. Dr. Bach grouped his flower remedies together based on these seven states to influence one’s emotions. The Bach Flower Remedies do not work in any biochemical way. In fact, they work in an energetic way. It seems that the flower remedies or essences capture the energetic imprint of the plant’s life force in the water. This imprint is what brings the balance back to our emotions.

Aromatherapy is the use of essential oils to balance or unify the physical, psychological and spiritual processes. When these processes are in balance they can promote the innate healing of the body. Aromatherapy isn’t new. Essential oils have been around for thousands of years. They were used throughout the bible and throughout history for many different reasons. Essential oils have been used to ward off the Black Plague as well as in aromatic baths to promote healing and detoxification. They have also been used to create perfumes and many other personal care products.
Essential oils come from the aromatic parts of plants. These volatile aromatic oils are extracted from various parts of the plant and possess different chemical components giving each oil its unique properties and benefits. Aromatherapy is all about the smell or the aroma of an essential oil. The interaction of the body’s sense of smell is what makes the oils so influential and beneficial.
Our Sense of Smell Impacts What?
Our body’s sense of smell is amazing and begins its journey through our olfactory system. The olfactory system breaks down scents into molecules and sends this information directly to our brain. One of the areas of the brain that receives this information is our limbic system. The limbic region of the brain can influence responses that relate to our emotions, behaviors, feelings, learning and memory. It is our sense of smell that makes aromatherapy so effective for influencing one’s mood or emotions as well as certain physical concerns and behaviors. Using essential oils via inhalation can be very effective for balancing or influencing our emotions. Amazing right?
